Abstract:Regenerative endodontic procedures (REPs) aim to repair and regenerate the pulp-dentin complex within the tooth, thus restoring its normal function and enhancing its survivability in the oral cavity. Current existing research regarding REPs mainly focuses on managing cases with immature necrotic permanent teeth with open apices showing favorable successful treatment outcomes with high survival rates after continuation of root formation and restoration of pulp neurogenesis. Recently, there has been a growing interest in employing REPs as a biologically based treatment approach for managing necrotic mature permanent teeth with fully formed apices. However, the clinical effectiveness of this approach remains a matter of debate. This lecture seeks to underscore the importance of REPs as an alternative treatment option for managing cases with necrotic mature permanent teeth. We are going to address the pros and cons of REPs in comparison to conventional root canal therapy, while critically appraising the existing evidence concerning its effectiveness from a clinical perspective. Together, we will answer the question whether REPs represent a viable treatment alternative for managing necrotic mature permanent teeth or not and explain the therapeutic protocol used for such intervention.
