Traumatic dental injury (TDI) is a challenging public health problem for professionals, and it has been seriously neglected. The prevalence of TDIs in primary and permanent teeth is relatively high. Dental trauma can result in displacement, fracture, or loss of a tooth. High cost, low standard of living, and lack of knowledge regarding urgent treatment of dental trauma may result in delaying the treatment, which may lead to irreversible consequences.
Guidelines for the management of TDIs should assist patients, community members (school teachers, parents), dentists, and other healthcare professionals (including undergraduate students) in decision-making. Guidelines also should be credible, readably understandable, and practical with the aim of delivering appropriate care as effectively and efficiently as possible.
Three factors influence the outcome of dental injuries:
1- The severity of trauma
2- The treatment provided
3- The patient’s healing response
Outlines to be discussed:
• TDIs Epidemiology, Prevalence and associated factors among Sudanese population.
• Comparison with other populations
• Guidelines for management.
• Psychological and social impact.
• Role of health care professions.
• Role of community (parents and school teachers, contact sports players).
Conclusion: TDI incidence and prevalence are increasing. Community: Undergraduates, health care workers, parents; and schoolteachers could play a role in emergency and long term management.
