Abstract: Challenges During Endodontic Treatment of Autistic Patients Abstract: Introduction: Endodontic treatment for patients with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) presents unique challenges for dental professionals. ASD is characterized by social communication deficits, restricted interests, and repetitive behaviors. Challenges during endodontic treatment of autistic patients can be categorized into sensory sensitivities, communication barriers, and behavioral management. Autistic individuals often experience heightened sensitivities to tactile, auditory, and visual stimuli, leading to increased anxiety during dental procedures. Objective: This study aims to explore the specific difficulties encountered during root canal treatment of autistic patients and to propose a workflow to address them. Understanding and addressing these challenges to create a comfortable and cooperative environment for successful treatment. Method: The workflow will allow proper planning and treatment addressing communication barriers due to impaired social interaction and difficulties in verbal and non-verbal communication. The planned use of visual supports, simplified language, and assistive technologies can enhance communication and facilitate a positive dental experience. The method will help dental professionals employ this workflow as an alternative method of communication to engage with autistic patients effectively. The proposed workflow will allow for managing anxiety, implementing behavior modification techniques, and providing a supportive environment. This implementation is a patient-centered approach that is tailored to each need. Conclusion: In conclusion, understanding the specific challenges associated with treating autistic patients and implementing the workflow suggested is necessary for providing high-quality endodontic care for this patient population. By addressing sensory sensitivities, communication barriers, and behavioral management within this suggested workflow, dental professionals can enhance the quality of care and ensure a positive dental experience for autistic patients.
